Archtecture design tips: pillow pit

As I kid I thought that I wanted to take gymnastics, it lasted for about a year, the only thing that I liked about it was the giant sponge pit. My memory of the sponge was that, it was like an indoor swimming pool filled with giant sponges. It was hard ( really it still is )  for me to understand why gymnastics was the only place that housed a sponge/ pillow pit. It was so much fun to play in, and I can only imagine how much fun it would be to sit/sleep in as well.

I’m no architect or engineer, but I can’t wrap my head around why the concept if a pillow pit hasn’t taken house design by storm.

I”m going to attempt to explain to you want an in home pillow pit would like like, however, my husband, and my students, often tell me that they don’t understand how my mind works, and often don’t seem to quiet grasp my vision.

Here’s how it would work, the pillow pit would be built into the floor.  ( basically imagine , building an in ground pool in your home) The floor would be created like a pocket door, so when not in use,  you could slide the floor back in place, hiding the pillow pit, and turning your floor, back into , just a floor.

I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that you really are seeing my vision.

Then with the snap of a finger…. you could slide the floor open , revealing a pillow pit. The perfect place to hang out and watch Downtown Abbey, to list to the audio version of Bossy Pants by Tina Fey, or turn through the pages of Realizing Empathy.

While I’ve yet to convince my husband to add pillow pit construction to the list of home renovations, I”ve done the next best thing and started designing pillows. Because in my mind there is no such thing as too many pillows. I currently sleep with 6, making me thankful that my husband only weighs 120 pounds, causing him to require very little room in our bed.

It’s time to start filling the pillow pit that you don’t have, but know that you want.
