Shorts for all

1

I was at my parents house eating breakfast, the newspaper was laying on the table, and as my eyes scanned the page in front of me two articles caught my eye. One was about a school that wants to ban shorts for 7-8th graders, this has parents outraged, calling community meetings, and making signs that say ” shorts for all.” The next article  stated, that new art deco streets lights were attracting too many bugs, the article was accompanied by a photo of said art deco light, with about 5 bugs on it. I was losing hope for humanity, plus I hate reading the paper, just can’t stand the layout, so I stopped reading.

Stay with me here, there is a point.

While I have a lot of issues with the new no shorts dress code, and parents the response, I’m not going to get into that now. But I am going to talk about the way that we dress, how it makes us feel and the message that our clothes send.

I’m not a big fan of dress codes, which shouldn’t surprise you, as I’m not a huge fan of rules, at least not rules that don’t make any sense. No one follows or enforces dress codes, because no one really knows the point. We’ve decided that a certain length of shorts are” too short”, but really there is a time and place for “most fashion.” Please note, I said most, not all.

Instead of making another dress code rule, I would love to see us look at why girls choose to dress the way that they dress, what message they think they’re sending. I’d like to see us teaching girls the difference between looking sexy and looking slutty because ladies let’s face it, there isn’t one of us out there that doesn’t like to feel sexy. However, the line often gets blurred, and that’s where the trouble starts.

It doesn’t have to be extra short or extra tight in order for you to look sexy. It needs to fit, it needs to feel good. When you put your clothes on in the morning they should make you want to go and strut your stuff on the street. You should stand tall, shoulders back, chest out. When you catch a glimpse of yourself as you walk past a mirror or a recently cleaned window, you should smile and nod, not think oh my, look at my muffin top popping over the edge of these jeans that are ten times too tight. Your skirt should not be so short that you feel the need to remain standing all day.

Our clothes tell a story, you need to think about what story you’re telling. Is it interesting? Intriguing? Boring?

Everything that I design is about powerful femininity. It’s about comfort and confidence, it’s about you, being you.

Women that wear my work take charge, make decisions, and aren’t afraid to step forward, stand up, and lean in.

You’ll walk down the street taller, knowing that you’re capturing people’s attention, but not just for how you look, but for the confidence, for the soul fire that flows around you.

So instead of ” Shorts for all”,  let’s fight for “confidence for all, and respect for self”
