 Save a Life: Redesign

_DSC0110-001

No matter what kind of creative work you do, you grown, your style and voice matures and changes. If you’re a writer look back at one of your early books or articles, if you’re a designer, go ahead, make yourself look back at some of your first designs, painters, think back to the beginning when you were new to holding the brush in your hands.  Your work has changed. While there is some beauty and innocence in where we began, our beginning work is often not what we wish to represent our current self.

As a textile designer, I go through a lot of yarn, I work hard to not waste my materials. My designs and voice have changed and grown quiet a bit over the last few years. Looking back through older pieces, I began to question what I could do to give the pieces new life. I didn’t want them to remain folded in a box. I wanted them to be pieces that were on display. And so I’ve set myself to giving some old pieces makeovers.

I made the above scarf a few years ago. At the time, I loved it, ( there are still elements that I like), however it easily tangled, and needed new life. So I got out the scissors and began cutting, carefully using the life of this old textile to breath new life into an even more amazing statement scarf.

What do you do with old projects?
