Jordan Reid of Ramshackle Glam on being Confident in your style

I first met Jordan, the brains and beauty behind Ramshackle Glam at Simply Stylist event in NYC. She’s had a wonderfully interesting career and has one of those jobs, that everyone wants, writing her own blog, a book, and working with fashion brands. I asked Jordan if she would be willing to share her story. Keep reading… it’s a good one.

Jordan has a great sense of style, and always looks good, but comfortable in every way possible at the same time.

I recently read your crop top post, where you openly discuss thinking about trying something a bit daring and outside of your comfort zone, and changing your mind. You also mention that you’re a bit “shy.” In your photos and videos you always appeared pulled together , sure, and confident, which is something that a lot of women struggle with.

What steps do you take to feel confident and in charge?

For years, when I was working as an actress, I struggled with serious stage fright, and it’s something that I still struggle with from time to time. I think part of the process of overcoming this has involved being honest about the fact that it’s just a part of me, and that there are worse things in the world than being a little shy, or blushing from time to time when I feel too many eyes on me. It’s the same with wearing crop tops, or anything that’s out of my zone: if I don’t do it perfectly…so what? Being open and honest about what makes you tick – which means experimenting, and which by necessity means not getting everything “right” all the time – is such a big part of what I think is valuable (and fun) in fashion, and in life.

How we look plays a role in how we feel about ourselves. I often hear women telling me that they “can’t pull off one of my scarves.” Can you talk about finding confidence in your style, and how you decide when to push the envelope and when not to?

I think as I’ve grown older the one thing I look for in any piece is whether I feel comfortable – both physically comfortable and “like myself” in it. Whether it’s “on-trend”, “cool”…that doesn’t really factor in; if I don’t feel good in something, off it comes. But I think it’s really important to remember to keep trying things, to keep allowing your style to evolve along with you. It’s just clothing. You can always take it off.
